Grow to Learn Spring 2018 Workshop Registration
The days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, which can only mean one thing: Spring is here! Along with our Spring 2018 Workshop Calendar for all Grow to Learn workshops and events!  As you all return to the classroom from winter break, and gear up for the spring planting and early summer harvest season, we have a number of wonderful events where you will learn alongside your fellow school gardeners and access gardening materials to bring back to your schools.We have lots of options, and will be adding to this form as the season goes on- check back regularly for the most up-to-date calendar. You must register to attend any Grow to Learn workshop- fill out the information below to sign up for one or more workshops of your choice.

Please register with a valid email address that you plan to check regularly- a registration reminder will be sent to you one week prior to your workshop with detailed access information for the workshop location. We will also use your registration email to get in touch should we need to postpone the event due to weather. If you are not connected with a registered school garden you are still welcome to attend any workshop. Learning is open to anyone, but only registered schools will be eligible to receive the free materials or give-away. If you would like to register your school garden (or check if your school is registered), visit www.growtolearn.org and click on the top right hand button that says ‘register your garden’.

Grow to Learn is administered through a partnership between GrowNYC and the NYC Parks Department’s Green Thumb division. Additional programming support is provided by the NYC DOE Office of School Food’s Garden to Café program.

Grant Writing and Garden Design
January 31, 2018. 100 Gold Street, Suite 3300, NY NY 10038. Select ONE session from the list to register. We have a morning and evening option for this workshop.This introduction to the Grow to Learn mini-grant will give you all the information you need to create an incredible application for a new or expansion garden project. The Spring 2018 Grow to Learn mini-grant RFP is open for applications from January 22 - February 23, 2018.  ***Please note that there is an online webinar version of this workshop on our website that you can access and watch at anytime.
Curriculum Development and the Garden Classroom
February 7, 2018: 4:00pm-6:00pm. Location: Teacher’s College at Columbia University - 525 W. 120th Street - Earth Friends Room New York, 10027. Community gardens offer an escape from the concrete jungle where young people and adults can learn from nature. Whether you’re a community gardener looking to develop activities for kids or a school gardener deepening your skills with garden lesson plan development, this workshop will help you co-create and share garden-based lesson plans that you can use in your garden.

Get ready for Spring and swing by Grow to Learn Seed Giveaway!  Schools registered with Grow to Learn will receive 20-30 packets of mixed vegetable, herb, and flower seeds for free.  Grab a Spring planting calendar and blank crop planning sheet while you're at it, and leave prepared for the upcoming growing season.  Packets are available on a first-come, first-served basis for registered schools only. Schools can attend ONE seed giveaway.

Tool Giveaway (G)
March 3, 2018: 10:00am-12:00pm. Location: The Queens County Farm Museum - in the parking lot at Green Meadows Farm - 74-10 Little Neck Parkway Glen Oaks, NY 11004 in Queens. Stop by our annual spring tool giveaway to pick up tools, gloves and other materials for working with kids in the garden! A vehicle or several garden members will be necessary to transport these materials, which will be supplied first-come, first-served to schools with up-to-date registrations with Grow to Learn. Please register by: February 22nd, 2018.

March 8, 2018: 4:30-6:00 p.m. Location: Mount Eden Children;s Academy - 1501 Jerome Avenue Bronx, NY - 10452.  Want an early start on your growing season? Building A Bulletin Board from Scratch (L,S)
March 15, 2018: 3:30-5:00 p.m. Location: P.S. 311X Lucero Elementary School - 1425 Walton Avenue Bronx, NY - 10452In this workshop we will construct a weatherized bulletin board for communicating important information to your garden groups and/or the general school community and public. This will be a simple cork board with a wooden frame and plexi-glass protective door with a hinge in the front. Groups would have the option to place this in the ground or lean it up against an existing structure or fence to secure it. This workshop will present an opportunity  for schools to request delivery of lumber and soil/compost from GreenThumb NYC Parks. Please Note: the materials for building this bulletin board will not be provided, but lists of the items needed along with plans for the structure will be provided.
School Garden Social (G)
March 20, 2018: 4:00pm-7:00pm. Location: Project Farmhouse - 76 East 13th Street New York, NY 10003. Join Grow to Learn and gardeners from across all of New York City to celebrate the growing school gardens movement!  This fun event will feature food, cooking demos,  prizes, hands-on activities, and lots of chances to connect with other school gardeners from across the city! We welcome as many members of your school community as are able to attend.
How to build a Sub-Irrigated Planter (SIP) in a Raised Bed (L,S)
April 12, 2018: 4:30-6 pm. Location: Growing Up Green Middle School - 36-49 11th Street Long Island City, NY - 11101. We will take our raised bed planter to the next level by incorporating sub-irrigation technology into it to make it more water efficient and also easier for you to maintain in the summer months. This workshop allows participants to request lumber and soil/compost for delivery from NYC Parks GreenThumb for September delivery. Please note that all requests are received first come first served and while supplies last.  
Beneficial Insect Giveaway (G)
April 17, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm. Location: McCarren Park Demo Garden - 457 Leonard Street Brooklyn, NY 11222. Celebrate Earth Week by growing beneficial insects in your classroom! We are giving away beneficial insect kits you can take back to your classrooms and release in your gardens! We'll also have pollinator flower attractant mixes and handouts about pollinator corridors and how to preserve their habitats with your gardens. Supplies are first come, first served to GTL registered schools.
Bronx Seedling Giveaway (G)
April 21, 2018: 10:00am-1:00pm. Location: La Finca Del Sur- 110 E. 138th Street and Grand Concourse Bronx, NY - 10451 -  Earth Week celebrations continue with our annual Seedling Giveaway! Registered Grow to Learn schools WITH UPDATED REGISTRATION FILES ONLY can pick up 2-3 flats of vegetables, herbs and flowers to take back to their school gardens. Potato Planters (L,S)
May 9, 2018: 4:30-6:30pm. Location: Cultural Arts Academy - 1400 Linden Blvd, Brooklyn, NY 11212.  Growing potatoes is easy! We'll cover how to make a planter for your spuds (sweet potato's growing season aligns perfectly with the school year!) and best practices for growing great potatoes. Registered Grow to Learn schools can fill out lumber and soil request forms for a Summer 2018 delivery.
 Butterfly Project NYC Native Plant Share (G)
May 12, 2018: 11:00am-1:00pm. Location: Grove Hill Community Garden 797 Eagle Ave. Join Bronx Green-Up/The New York Botanical Garden and Butterfly Project NYC to find out more about the connections between native plants and pollinators and how to encourage them in urban landscapes. This year’s workshop is part of NYC Wildflower Week. Plants will be available for pick-up to be used in schoolyards, community gardens and other public spaces while supplies last. Garden Harvests and Cooking with Kids (G)
May 29, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm. Location: SNAP to Grow Urban Farm - 8885 26th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11214. As Spring turns into Summer, the first crops from the garden are getting ready for harvest! During this workshop, we will go over different harvesting techniques for different crops, as well as how to use that garden produce in tastings and cooking activities with your students! We will also collaborate to turn all these activities into aligned lessons that you can do in the classroom! Registered Grow to Learn schools will receive a variety of cooking supplies for their garden classrooms.
Beginner Gardener Intensive (G)
June 2-3, 2018: 9:00am-4:00pm. Location: Governors Island Teaching Garden. Are you a beginner school gardener, looking for some extra help getting started?  Join Grow to Learn staff and partner organizations to learn all the school garden basics, from bed building to harvesting!  Hosted at GrowNYC's Governors Island Teaching Garden, this workshop will run for two days (9am ferry - 4pm on Saturday, June 2nd and 9am ferry - 12pm on Sunday, June 3rd).  We'll discuss bed construction, soil, seeds and planting, maintenance, weeds and pests, and harvesting and eating!  Along the way, demo lessons and curriculum connections with be highlighted in connection to different garden tasks.  This weekend intensive is intended for new school gardeners who have or are planning an outdoor garden at any NYC PreK-12 public or charter school.  Please note that schools DO NOT have to be registered with Grow to Learn to attend, but only schools registered with Grow to Learn will be eligible to receive free materials associated with this intensive.  RSVPs will close on 5/25/18 or be capped at 35 for this event, whichever comes first. Please note that reaching GrowNYC's Teaching Garden requires taking the ferry from the Battery Maritime Museum located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. More detailed directions will be emailed to attendees once their RSVP is received, but the ferry will have a list of all registered attendees, so please be aware that only registered gardeners will be able to ride.
Teaching with Weeds: Cultivating Love of Wild Plant Medicines
July 12, 2018: 6:00pm-8:00pm. Location: Taqwa Community Farm - 90 W 164th St, Bronx, NY 10452. Dandelion, burdock, violet leaf and ground ivy: just a few of the plants we've all encountered growing in our school gardens in between the rows of neatly cultivated tomato, carrot and brassicas. Unwelcome as they may seem, these plants have been valued for centuries as medicines and sources of wild food. In this workshop educators will learn ways to help young people develop their plant identification skills, and an appreciation of the healing plants—often discarded as mere weeds—that grow abundantly all over our city. This workshop is in partnership with Green Thumb and Jess Turner of Olamina Botanicals
Bike Tour of Youth Gardens Raising Chickens
Join us for this tour as we will be rolling up to chicken coops in Harlem and the South Bronx that were founded by and currently tended to by young people in nearby schools and programs. We will learn about unique features of the coops as well as quick snapshots of the stops involved in starting a chicken coop in a school or community garden. The tour will begin at the coop at Harlem Grown and then finish in the Bronx. For those who do not want to bike there will be a bus available. Seating will be limited -- please make it clear if you would like to take the bus when you RSVP. Pre-registration required.
