Special Category
A culturally relevant flower, fruit, herb, or vegetable grown this garden season with a two to three-sentence description of the importance of the plant.
- 1st Place: Nepali Cucumbers
Grown by Manaslu Gurung at Two Coves Community Garden: "This cucumber seed came from Nepal and it's a type of cucumber that can be eaten as any cucumber while its young and about a foot long. But their specialty is really to let them grow until their skin gets brown and tough, inside the fruit turns white and you pickle it with special spices - these cucumber pickles are really prized in Nepal. I had no idea if I would have any luck growing them here and to my delight they did amazingly well, producing 6 very healthy cucumbers."
- 2nd Place: Lillies
Grown by Iraida DeJesus at Jardin de la Familia: "The beauty of the lilies is so admired by the people in different countries that they have their own uses and meaning for this plant. First time cultivating the lilies and the garden and took all my admiration, her aromatic scents, her vibrant colors and her size. One of my favorite flowers and it just became part of the garden for the future years to come."
- 3rd Place: Callaloo
Grown by the Lincoln Road Garden Group: "Callaloo (Amaranth) is a vibrant symbol of Caribbean heritage and community in East New York. This nutrient-rich plant connects generations through traditional dishes like callaloo with saltfish, bringing families together. Its resilience in diverse growing conditions mirrors the strength of our neighborhood, making it both a cultural and environmental asset in our garden."
